So, What’s Holistic Nutrition Anyway?

In the ongoing quest of living a cleaner, healthier lifestyle for the purpose of losing weight, keeping fit or other health-related reasons, the most challenging part is finding the right nutrition plan that will encompass all our dietary needs without compromising taste. The hundreds (if not millions!) of diet plans available today do not make it easy, because while they each have a wealth of information to back-up their promises of quick weight loss and other health benefits, it’s difficult to know which one will deliver positive results.

Because food sustains our overall well-being and no one diet is ideal for everyone, the best way to figure out the perfect diet is to know what you’re physical, emotional and mental needs are.

A holistic approach may just be the solution we have been looking for as its technique covers not only food, but other aspects of an individual’s lifestyle!

Holistic Nutrition

As the name suggests, holistic nutrition is an alternative form medicine that integrates the emotional, physical, spiritual and environmental aspects of a person’s life. There is an increased awareness of holistic nutrition as the best way to promote and attain optimal health and well-being.

Based on sound nutrition principals, holistic nutrition consultants will not administer medications but instead focus on guiding you toward correcting the chemical and hormonal imbalances in the body through natural, organic foods and (sometimes) herbal supplements that will boost your body’s normal detoxification functions.

A solid foundation for a healthy lifestyle begins with having a good relationship with food. The core fundamentals of a holistic diet is to understand an individual’s health and nutritional needs and design a plan that best suits them. Each nutrition plan needs to include a balance of carbohydrates, proteins, healthy fats, fiber, vitamins and minerals.

Holistic, natural foods are fresh, organically sourced or grown foods that will detox and flush toxins out of the system, aid digestion, boost metabolism and strengthen the immune system. These food choices prove beneficial in the long run as they prevent diseases such as obesity, diabetes, cancers and heart complications.

Recommended natural foods are vegetables and fruits that are naturally loaded with antioxidants, fiber, vitamins and minerals. Chicken, turkey, lamb, pork and beef are terrific sources of protein. Fish and seafood are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and iodine. These essential fatty acids lower risks of diseases such as dementia, heart diseases and depression. Some recommended whole grains include wild and brown rice, barley, whole wheat flours, dried fruits and nuts. In moderation they are a good source of magnesium, vitamin B1, and beneficial fats.

It’s imperative that you do a little bit of research in order to avoid fads and gimmicky diets that promise an accelerated ‘weight loss’ but end up depleting your body of essential minerals, nutrients and come with no guarantees that the lost weight stays off.

The holistic nutrition approach offers healthier lifestyle choices that can lead to a happy, healthy and sustainable way of life.
